Flash Video Crashes Firefox All The Time
My Firefox 3.0.5 is crashed often by a Flash video -- usually, but not always, this comes from a Flash advertisement, but this is happening regularly with such sites as the NY Times, Yahoo! Finance, etc. and is a real pain. How much of a pain? So much of a pain that I am actually considering (Heavens Forbid!!) going to IE -- that's how bad.
It's a shame because Firefox is so much faster, cooler and feature-filled, but the Flash problem just won;t go away. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash. I have searched out every old version of it on my PC (running XP) and deleted it. But no change. By the way, Flash does NOT crash on IE, only on Firefox.
There must be a fix. Firefox tech help keeps saying it is an Adobe problem. If so, why isn't IE affected??

Inappropriate?Because IE uses an ActiveX method to include Flash, while everything else (this would happen on, say, Google Chrome if you tried that) uses a different method because nothing but IE uses ActiveX.
I can practically guarantee that if you FULLY uninstall and reinstall flash, it'll stop.
I’m sad
-
This "fix" doesn't work. -
This "fix" doesn't work. -
No it don't stop I'm sorry to say..I'm sick of it crashing on me.It saids going to slow or We are sorry please send report so we can fix it..Have not fix it..I don't think Fire Fox can run with Windows 7..That is sad.. -
does not work -
does not work -
As per above. Fix does not work, I have tried it twice now. -
Inappropriate?I have performed the FULL uninstall/reinstall (as per Adobe's instrux) at least four times and this has not stopped the problem
I’m now frustrated AND sad...
-
i have done it at least 10 times grrrrrrrrr -
Inappropriate?I don't know what to tell you, I haven't seen anyone else still have problems persist after reinstalling flash.
Can you install Extension list dumper and dump your extensions list and your plugins list to the thread?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Thomas -- here is the dump:
Application: Firefox 3.0.5 (2008120122)
Operating System: WINNT (x86-msvc)
- Extension List Dumper 1.14.1

- Java Quick Starter 1.0
(Disabled)
- RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin 1.0
(Disabled, Incompatible)
- SearchStatus 1.27
I’m hopeful????
-
Inappropriate? That's only your extensions, I want the plugins dump too.
Also, RealPlayer Browser Record is what's crashing it, by the way.
I’m sad
-
I have the same problem and I don't have RealPlayer installed. -
Inappropriate?Sorry. Here they are. I'm not sure what to do about the RealPlayer Browser Record -- it says it is incompatible with the current version of FireFox, but it is also disabled and FireFox won't let me "uninstall" it. Same goes for the plug-ins below that say "disabled" -- no way to "uninstall" them
Application: Firefox 3.0.5 (2008120122)

I’m getting more hopeful....
-
Inappropriate?By the way, the quick and multiple responses are VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I see 3 copies of Java in there. Maybe a full uninstall and reinstall of that, too, would help?
Also, what's "Shockwave for Director", do you have Macromedia Director (I think it's called) installed?
I’m sad
-
"Maybe" something will work? Everyone on this thread who has posted a "fix" has been wrong. When will someone stand up and say the obvious, that not one of the software producers has admitted responsibility nor offered a fix to this persistent, incurable problem? -
Inappropriate?I was able to get rid of the RealPlayer ext, but there are several I'm unable to delete or uninstall. But they ARE disabled. In any case, I uninstalled Flash (fully) and reinstalled it. NY Times home page crashed immediately. Here is the latest dump:
Application: Firefox 3.0.5 (2008120122)

I’m bewithced, bothered and bewildered
-
Inappropriate?Yes. I just tried that and went to a page with Flash (on my own site) and FireFox crashed...in safe mode....
I’m anxious
-
Safe Mode only disables extensions, that was a just in case test. -
Inappropriate?Ok, here's a thought: go to the plugins panel and disable Shockwave Flash. If it still crashes, you know it's something else.
I’m sad
-
I have intermittency with flash in Firefox 3.05 also. CNN's videos play, then the next minute I get a black video window or crash. Most Video on my other computer crashes Ffox. It's put up so many crash dumps. Any idea why this browser is so finicky? -

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled Flash like suggested earlier in the thread? -
Inappropriate?I've disabled a number of add-ons and plug-ins and for the past few minutes anyway, I'm not crashing on the usual pages. But this is erratic, because I think it depends on certain ads, etc. I'll see how things go over the next day and report back. Thanks again for your voluminous and speedy help. I hope this moves us toward a solution.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem but i dont crash on every site that uses flash so it does not happen that much and as you can see i posted my extensions list dump and I you now how i would like to know how to remove the Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 add on

Inappropriate?DG -- My FireFox doesn't crash all the time either. It tends to crash on certain sites, some but not all of the time. But I think that's because of some ads. I have been told that some advertisers use illegal commands or constructions in their Flash videos -- I'm not sure how that's possible.
-
Inappropriate?Well -- I've given it a day, and I am still crashing when certain Flash file load in -- it seems to be happening mostly on the NY Times home page. Not sure where to go now.
I’m flashed
-
What have you given a day? flashblock? Or disabling the flash plugin (for more than just 5 minutes) to see if it still happens? -
Inappropriate?I disabled the flash plug-in for almost a day and did not get any crashes. When I enabled it again, the crashes began. As a test, I then disabled the JAVA plug-ins, but I still got Flash crashes. I have not tried flashblock, because I don't want to have to click things all the time to enable it. Anyway, still a mystery as to why I keep crashing.
I’m perplexed
-
Inappropriate?Haven't heard any more suggestions about what the problem might be, so I uninstalled FF 3.0.5 and the flash player (in the manner described by Adobe). I rebooted my PC and then reinstalled FF and the plug-in. Still crashing after all these tears.
What to do, what to do????
I’m sad
-
I am out of ideas, except for an OS reinstall, but that's a pretty big move. Others might have more, you could try posting at http://support.mozilla.com and see what happens. -
Inappropriate? If you install flashblock, and then add the button to your toolbar (View > toolbars>customize, then drag it to your toolbar), you can then toggle between the "normal" mode (the green dot), and the "block and then click to play mode(red X)". It's not a true fix, but it makes it much easier to deal with the crash-prone sites (use block mode), while not being a pain in properly coded sites (use normal mode).
-
Inappropriate?Latest flash and Adobe player crash every time. OS is generic Linux.
This has been a problem since Firefox 3. Adobe is working with every other browser...why not firefox? -
Inappropriate?Hi I am getting the bellowed error when i browse my URL. The Firefox crashes with this error report.....

can anybody tell me or guide me how to resolve this issue? -
Jayshah -- I posted this question almost a year ago. Since that time I have seen no answers from this board or anywhere else, other than using Flashblock to disable Flash on most sites. Oddly enough I just installed the latest FireFox update 3.5.5. (and Adobe Flash Player) and am getting more crashes from Flash than ever.
I hate using IE, but I'm getting seriously ticked at Firefox. -
Inappropriate? This is a huge problem that Adobe refuses to acknowledge. It just recently started happening to me and I've found onine that MANY others are having this problem. It seems to have started affecting tons more people recently. Maybe it's time content providers find an alternative that works.
I’m FURIOUS AT ADOBE
-
Will -- I agree with you. This is a seriously large problem, but think the question is whether or not this an Adobe issue. Flash does not crash IE in this way. Just Firefox. I don't use Safari or Opera and would like to hear from users of those browsers if they too are having these issues. I would think that with all the Firefox users crashing on Flash, and the "crash reports" being sent to Firefox, that someone would have figured out why this is happening. Now it doesn't happen on all Flash modules -- I've been told that it may happen when a Flash module is inserted in a non-standard way and the code messes up Firefox. But I create Flash video myself and have had the crash happen on my own work as well, but not consistently (one time the module loads fine, another time it doesn't). My guess is that there are two or more conditions that have to exist for the crash to happen, but who knows what they are. Again, this does not seem to be an issue with IE. Maybe Adobe and Microsoft have some secret agreement??!!
Of course, when advertisers realize that many Firefox users never see their spiffy Flash ads, maybe a fix will be found. -
Inappropriate?I've been dealing with this since early august. I'm fine as long as I have flashplayer disabled. But i really need this fixed, i do school online and my classes require flash. I'm on a mac btw and this has been crashing safari as well. I haven't got a clue about macs but I've tried repairing permissions, uninstalling and reinstalling (properly) flash, and reinstalling FF.
I’m so sick of this
-
Inappropriate?the problem seems to be only on sites that use jw player and they need to address that not adobe or firefox
it just so happens jwplayer is very popular, -
Inappropriate?Hey same problem here. I have got this problem since 6 months. I have checked many forums but haven't got any answer please help me...
I’m pissed offf
-
Inappropriate?i have the same exact problem... but it isn't just firefox. it's chrome, opera, safari, camino...ive tried downloading almost every browser, but flash is still crashing everything. i cant watch any videos, or else i'll be forced to quit the browser or it will automatically crash.
-
Inappropriate?AND i've uninstalled/reinstalled about a thousand times...doesnt do anything. the problem started with firefox, and chrome was okay for a bit, but then it started affecting everything
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?me too i have done the same process and got no solution
-
Inappropriate?found a solution: reinstall osx, then do a security update.
-
Inappropriate?Got the same problem as you did but paid no attention at first.
Then when a lot of people started having the same issues I decided to investigate.
The problem seems to be in hardware acceleration in newer versions of Flash. (maybe newer drivers would solve this but I think this solution is much simpler)
1. Download Flash uninstaller and run it
2. Download and install Flash 10.1 pre-release at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/fl...
That should do the trick.

Inappropriate?just tried your fix acko085 - no improvement.
i downloaded the flash uninstaller and ran it.
and i installed flash 10.1 pre-release at your link
even after that, any site with flash video still crashes firefox, safari and opera.
I’m grateful for your efforts, but still stuck

Inappropriate?Same problem here, since 1 year ago, flash crashes ALL browsers (crome, ie, safari, matrox....) even windows livr messenger(the banners on botton its flash ... ) and I format many times, I try windows xp, vista, seven, and the problem persists
I've submit many error report after crashes, and I still waiting a solution.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? For me, I can always get it to crash on one or more of the CNN money pages.
Isn't there a way to make firefox drop the offending load with an error which doesn't crash the browser?

Inappropriate?I've had this problem for months. (It started when I installed System 7.) It doesn't matter if I'm running IE, Chrome, or Firefox. I've done the complete de-install, re-install routine. I've tried patches. Nothing works. There is no reliable help out there from anyone. No one has accurately identified the cause of the problem. No one acknowledges that it is a serious problem affecting many, many users. Everyone is fingerpointing. It's maddening.
I’m exasperated

Inappropriate?Just for the record, I have installed the latest Flash version 10.0.42.34 and Firefox version 3.6 -- I am running Windows XP with SP3.
I still get Firefox crashing with certain Flash content -- although I must say less than before. Still it happens. I am beginning to think it may be a problem with certain Flash files that open some kind of memory error. But it's weird.
Here's an example: the other day I tried to watch an episode of "The Daily Show". I would see the opening commercial and then when the program started...crash! This happened 5 or 6 times. So each time I reopened Firefox and tried it again. For some reason, around the sixth iteration, it played okay.
Go figure....
I’m so used to crashing, I would miss it if it got fixed....
-
Inappropriate?Fixed. but you're not gonna like it... reinstalled OSX (like kristen suggested above) using these instructions:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-...
...it's actually not that bad - and since i did the reinstall i am as good as new - no crashes whatsoever.
if you need a temp solution until you have time to do the reinstall - disable flash in Firefox with the Flashblock add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
Flashblock will disable all flash - and let you approve only the flash elements you want played on any page you visit. pretty cool.
I’m good to go

Inappropriate?I am using WinXP SP3. I am having the same problem with Firefox and Flash esp when I am on the Digg web site. My computer completely freezes. I've taken my computer in to two different computer repair places and they could not figure fix the problem.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I am also having this problem. It seems to have progressed from flash video being stuck on slow with frames freezing and audio sounding like it was filtered through a very scratched up vinyl record to completely freezing firefox as soon as it starts to try to load flash video on youtube or hulu.
I have uninstalled flash and reinstalled-- my version of flash is 10.0.42.34, on Windows7 OS, and firefox 3.5.7
My error report from windows when it tells me that firefox is not responding is:

Inappropriate?i had this happen today but i fixed it i kept reinstalling and it wouldnt work and i tried everything because this never happened before but then i realized that i didnt check if the one i was reinstalling was for firefox so i found this link
http://download.cnet.com/Flash-Player...
and went from there and then restarted my computer and it stopped crashing!! so glad because it was doing it all day and i had reistalled the browsers and nothing was working
I’m excited

Inappropriate?"Maybe" something will work? Everyone on this thread who has posted a "fix" has been wrong. When will someone stand up and say the obvious, that not one of the software producers has admitted responsibility nor offered a fix to this persistent, incurable problem?
I’m outraged

Inappropriate?this problem started for me today, and I installed firefox 3.6 today. Have tried uninstalling firefox, reinstalling firefox, uninstalling and reinstalling flash and installing chrome, nothing has fixed this.
I don't care who's fault it is just sort the fricking problem out.

Inappropriate?I've discovered the problem while I was developing my own flash video player. There exists the ability to enable *smooth streaming* during video playback. When this is turned on in the video player, Flash Player utilizes graphics acceleration (via DirectX I would assume). Smooth streaming basically takes a video and makes it look smoother to allow better size scaling. When I disable this feature in my code, my browser never crashes, but when I enable it, it ends up crashing all of my browsers sporadically.
The reason why ALL browsers crash is because Flash Player is using your PC's graphics accelerator. Commercial video sites like YouTube, Hulu, etc. would have this feature enabled in their video player code. This is why the Flash Player will crash on most video sites but not all.
Now the key is to get Adobe to recognize this. I've opened a bug ticket in their system.
This is also why some of you who replied to this thread have recognized that upgrading your DirectX drivers have fixed your issue.
The crashing issue started to occur when I updated to Flash Player version 10 and up. Hope this helped.
I’m amused

Eddie's solution is to create your own flash video player? nice idea. thanks. I didn't like youtube anyway. -
Inappropriate? No my comment was to point out the root cause of the problem (that's what you do when you troubleshoot). The root cause is Flash Player utilizing graphics acceleration when "SMOOTH STREAMING" is enabled by whoever developed the video player.
The solution is to update your DirectX drivers from Microsoft. All who are crashing, are you on Windows XP? -
I am using xubuntu 10.04, Firefox 3.6.3 and Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45. Firefox not only crashes, it logs me out! Opera 10.10 seems not to be affected by this bug. -

Inappropriate?installed the latest directX drivers, and youtube now works! Fankx Eddie, nice troubleshooting there! :)
-
Inappropriate?Installing the latest DirectX drivers is not the fix-all it's claimed to be on this thread. It is no more a "guaranteed" fix than any of the other fixes listed previously. I've done everyhing recommended on this thread to "fix" the problem. It doesn't matter if I'm running Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome, the problem persists. Surely a comment is coming soon in which someone will complain that even after installing the latest DirectX drivers the problem persists. Still, and again, the software developers aren't acknowledging the issue, and no one appears to be concerned with fixing it.
I’m skeptical

Inappropriate?I am using OSX 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard). Firefox (3.6.2) is crashing as soon as any Flash movie loads. If I disable the flash plug-in, totally stable. No problem with Safari or Chrome at all. But I want to be able to use downloadhelper in Firefox. I did not have this problem in October, 2009, so it's due to updates since then.
-
Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem, just installed 3.6 from 2.0.0.4, have the same plugins and addons from 2.0.0.4 and it never crashed, ever.
I seriously don't believe its a Adobe/Macromedia issue, I think its a Firefox issue that THEYRE ignoring-- I'm going back to 2.0.0.4 -
Inappropriate?@Refried, It's not just Firefox. It happens with Chrome and and Explorer, too.
I’m agitated
-
Inappropriate?I have no problems with flash 10 r45 on Firefox 2.0.0.4 -- NONE.
IE (6.0.2900) I have no problems either.
(winXP sp3)
Also I might mention, that ff3.6 takes up a considerably more amount of ram and resources than 2.0.0.4 yet produces half the speed and results.
I literally have to open the browser once just to let 3.6 load everything, then close it and restart it to get decent courser/browse/highlight speed for shortcuts.
And the fact that Flash just crashes 3.6 like it's xmas doesn't keep me interested in it one bit or the direction its going.
--I actually registered like 20min ago just to reply to this post, I'm currently testing alternate versions of flash with 3.6 and it produces the same results.
I’m not impressed.
-
Inappropriate?Flash v9 r262 works on FF3.6, I have yet to crash. It may be worth giving it a shot.
However if you try it, be sure to remove all previous versions of flash from both your plug-ins dir and your \WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash dir BEFORE installing.
Do not have any browser windows open while uninstalling/installing.
Hope it helps you, as if all goes well, it may help me stick with 3.6-- we'll see.

Inappropriate?I checked my plugins for needed updates. Then I uninstalled flash, and shockwave director (with the uninstall program from adobe) before installing their latest updates. Also updated java. Somehow *fingers crossed that it will last* I'm now able to watch video without crashing firefox on my Windows 7 laptop.
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?I started this thread a year ago. Over this period, Firefox and Adobe issued several updates of their products. I have noticed, like ocean waves, there are periods when the Flash Crash happens much less, or much more. I recently upgraded to Firefox to version 3.6.2 and the crashing has increased significantly. However, other users at my location are using exactly the same software (Firefox and Flash) without a problem. This leads me to the inescapable conclusion that it is either my graphics card or some conflicting software on my laptop that is the cause of this. It is an old school Dell Inspiron 8600. My graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo.
Interestingly, I have not had this problem with IE at all. However, I can't stand IE, so I just use Firefox with Flash Block.
I would love it if someone found the answer, but I think that by the time that happens, I'll have bought a new computer!
I’m tired of this
-
Inappropriate? For me, the problem definitely affects all browsers. So I suppose the graphics card or something else related to my computer, not the browser, seems to be the cause. I've got OSX, don't know much about graphics cards, do I need to reinstall the system or is there an easier way?
I’m grim

Inappropriate?Same here BeeCee- I run the same exact set of apps / systems here at home as I do at work, yet ev time i play a video here FF crashes, and that does NOT happen at work. Happens to another friend at work, yet not at home- so there is some set of variables at work here. Reproducing / troubleshooting has not worked at home. Kinda learned not to watch vid's at home- which is a damn shame [WinXP SP3 / FF3.0.15 / custom sys - so lots of audio apps] ..... DANG. Will be checking video card / graphics accelorator to see if its that and i think that it will be..........
I’m bummed

I have some potentially interesting information. A few days ago, Firefox upgraded itself to 3.6.3 -- well, let me tell you...crash crash crash. I couldn't even get on the Bank of America site and many other sites were just crashing -- way more than before, way more. The interesting thing happened when I went to the Flashblock plugin and deleted all "allowed" sites. Meaning that Flash was now blocked from ALL sites. No difference. Firefox crashed constantly. So I reinstalled version 3.6 and the crashing still occurred occasionally, but much less. Remember Flashblock has been enabled for all sites...leading me to the current conclusion that it isn't Flash that's causing this problem, but some other code -- the main suspect I think is some type of Javascript -- something in the code that calls the Flash routine (probably from an ad server). And that it is causing version 3.6.3 to crash way more.
Has anyone else experienced this??? -

Inappropriate?Kevin -- you keep posting negative comments about this thread, about how no one has come up with a fix and that this board is a waste of time. There is an option link at the bottom of your email that reads "Stop following this question". If you really believe that nothing useful can come out of this discussion, then you should click it and you won't be notified every time someone posts a useless piece of information. But perhaps you, like all of us, are hoping that a piece or two of information might shed light on this problem, which is why you keep following the thread. But if not, I (and others I'm sure) would appreciate it if you didn't clutter up our inboxes with double postings and complaints about the board. Thanks.

Inappropriate?I just came across this post because I was apparently having the same problem. I doubt it'll be helpful, but I figured I'd share my experience in case it is. I have a MacBook Pro running OS X Snow Panther (10.6.3) and the current versions of Firefox (3.6.3) and Shockwave Flash Plugin (10.0.45.2). Suddenly this afternoon Firefox started crashing. It crashed when I accessed the NY Times, apparently while loading brightcove.com animated advertisements, and it crashed when I accessed The Daily Show. Since these are the main websites I go to, I was devastated. I was all the more devastated when I saw this post. Clearly a lot of very bright people (e.g., BeeCee's posts) who know a ton about computers (e.g., Eddie's post), and no solution. I'm neither of these so felt hopeless. I tried Safari, installed Chrome, re-installed Shockwave Flash and Firefox, but to no avail. After an hour or two of this business, I rebooted, and that seems to have solved the problem for me! Obviously this won't solve everyone's problems (BeeCee has probably rebooted during the year since he opened this post), but I wanted to let you guys know that it appears to have solved my problem in the off chance that this information helps anyone shed light on the broader problem.
-
Forgot to mention: before rebooting (when it was crashing), Firefox wouldn't crash when I disabled the Shockwave Flash plugin. But this wasn't all that useful because then I couldn't see the Daily Show videos. -
Inappropriate? If none of the browsers work and none of the player updates resolve the issue, then it's probably your display card driver or setting. Update your driver and/or change your display mode.
-
Inappropriate?i had this problem just few days back, it's very frustrating ... firefox gives a crash reporter error and then quits automatically! i have conducted avira scan and registry scan through Reginout, and finally it's fixed now .. as it was the active-x and the registry corruption behind it ...

Inappropriate?Shockwave Flash sucks big time. BTW since it looks like a video-card/drivers related bug, I am using ThinkPad T40 and Xubuntu 10.04.
-
Inappropriate?this has been going on for months for me and the only thing that actually worked was to just uninstall Flash completely.
-
Inappropriate?for me it crashes on every webpage with flash (dailymotion / youtube / googlevideo etc etc) on all browsers I've tried...
latest drivers for gfx card, latest FF, latest directx, complete uninstall/install of shockwave, windows is updated...nothing helps...this problem started today...running win7PRO 64bit.. -

Inappropriate? In Ubuntu it seems to be caused by an error with the audio server. Make sure pulse audio is initiating when you play a flash video. Not having pulse audio, or another supported audio server enabled, will cause Firefox to stop responding until the audio server has been started. Try checking your Firefox configuration file to make sure it is set to use the correct audio server.
If you are having problems with flash only working at certain times, it may be caused by flash bypassing your audio server and defaulting to alsa while another application is using your sound card. If another application, such as a game or music player, is allready using your sound card it is impossible for Firefox to play audio if it is trying to access your sound card directly through alsa.
This is because alsa lacks the capability of handling audio from more than one application, which is why pulse audio is used. Pulse audio handles multiple applications with sound but doesn't know how to access your sound card directly. In order for pulse audio to access your sound card it uses alsa.
It is very important that you have both of these installed and properly configured in order to play audio from more than one application at a time. You may be able fix this by setting the audio server in the Firefox configuration file to your systems default.
Another soloution may be to add yourself to the audio group by typing this in your terminal:
sudo adduser yourusernamehere audio
This will give your username administrative rights for the audio group
Conflicts with your audio server can also cause other browsers to stop working with flash video, If flash is making other browsers crash, I would recommend making sure they are also properly configured to use the proper audio server.
When I narrow down the problem based on the symptoms I'll post a real step-by-step tutorial with all the fancy code and scripts for each of your symptoms. For now I haven't yet figured out what the exact cause for each of the problems is but I'm positive I can have a real solution (for the ubuntu users at least) in the next day or two. Everybody else, sit tight.
I’m workin on it.

Inappropriate?jasir what os are you running
-
mine is Windows XP 2.. browser 3.6.3.. It still crashing.. Now i am testing with firefox 3.6.2.. let me check.. -
I'm not too familiar with windows but its most likely caused by flash trying to access the video memory on a video card that isn't supported by flash. This is more popular with intel and ATI video cards, due in part too the fact that it is incredibly hard for developers to get the correct arcitectures for intel and ATI graphics cards. This is because Intel has applied strict licenses to all of its proprietary hardware and software.
You could try right clicking on the video before it plays, going to settings, and unchecking enable hardware acceleration. This is going to make videos take up more clock cycles and use more physical memory but it should at least let you watch the video without Firefox freezing or crashing.
You may also want to check DirectX Diagnostics to make sure your graphics drivers are working properly. Just go to start, click run, type dxdiag in the dialogue box, press enter, then look for the "test directdraw" and "test direct3d" buttons under the video tab. as long as the model rotates smoothly then your drivers should be fine. -

Inappropriate?Jasir,
If you read earlier posts on this thread, you will see that many people are having this problem, no matter what browser they use. I personally have this problem whether I use IE, Firefox, or Chrome. People have also had this problem over a range of operating systems.
I share your frustration. No one has offered a fix that works--and no one on the software/hardware development side has taken responsibility or identified the problem.
The most knowledgeable and intriguing comment to date, however, was made, I believe, by Kyle Robert Hewitt above. He appears to have a deeper understanding of this issue than anyone else who has thus far commented.
I’m feeling jerked around.
-
@Kevin
U r exactly rite... In this discussion Only Mr Kyle Robert Hewitt given one Important comment here. All others were jst asking the same questions including me.
@Kyle Robert Hewitt
Actually I am not tryin to open any video files. While i am tryin to open any gmail msgs also it is crashing. -
It may be a corrupt font i'll look into this more after windows finishes installing. -
I think its your palatine font that needs to be replaced in order to get g-mail working again, why do you think its a problem with flash, gmail should only require flash for gmail talk and video not just e-mail. -
edit=Palatino font does cause gmail to crash forefox and opera* somewhat confirmed not sure if this is why its crashing for you but it could be a good start -
I noticed someone mentioned gmail crashing. My gmail started crashing too. At first it would even load, or log me in at all. So I uninstalled all Java related plugins and addons. Then it was up to sign me in and load gmail, forever just when you think it's loaded, it crashes Firefox. I found out it was Shockwave.
I'm running FF3.6, Windows Vista 64bit SP2. -
Inappropriate?Kyle, I have adjusted the hardware settings so that hardware acceleration is turned off. My experience is flash crashes my computer frequently whether hardware acceleration is turned off or not.
-
I tried adobe flash uninstaller... it also failed.. still crashing... -
Jasir stop messing with flash, gmail isn't flash based your problem is with something else. Try changing fonts like I recommended and let me know how it works out for you. If you need help my e-mail is kylerobhew1-AT-gmail.com all e-mails are welcome. Also Jasir reinstalling flash does absolutely nothing unless you delete your firefox profile first, flash isnt a stand alone program, its more of a library for all of your web based applications to use in order to decipher the code its written in and has no actual configuration. the configuration that makes it work is located in firefox more specifically your firefox profile along with configurations for any other plugin you have installed in firefox and it cant be freshly insatalled unless you delete the firefox profile or configuration its using first.
a good way of telling what is causing problems is looking into what program actually controls the one your trying to fix, in this case firefox conrtols flash so therefore the configuration for flash is in firefox. -
Inappropriate?@ kevin
This is turning into quite a melon scratcher.
Sometimes java and flash can cause conflicts with each other, try going to tools then options in Firefox and then unchecking enable java under the content tab. I wish I could come up with a better solution for the windows guys here its been a while since I've used that os. I'll get it installed on a system in the near future and do my own testing then get you guys a real solution instead of just some work a rounds that may or may not work, I just hope my advice isn't a repeat of all the bad advice floating around every forum on the Internet. this fix should also work in chrome and Internet exploder as long as this option exists but is not guaranteed in any brand of browser.
If you're daring you can also delete your Firefox profile. If your going to do this read everything I type from this point forward so you know what this will do. It may not be in all of your best interests to take this route and it also may not work but at the very least it will restore your browser to the state it was in when freshly installed and it should be reversible as long as you follow all of my instructions. You can find your Firefox profile by going to this directory in your windows file system "C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\." and looking for a file with a bunch of random characters for the name and then moving that folder to somewhere safe WHILE FIREFOX IS CLOSED. If this folder isn't where I said it was look in the guide linked below, it should be where I said if your still using win 7. If you try to do this with Firefox open the system will think Firefox is open when it isn't. After doing this it is a good idea to restart your computer, also you will loose any add on's and bookmarks you have saved with that profile. Make sure its worth it for you to loose all of this information just to watch videos online. You may also need to install flash again even if previously installed, if so then do it. This will ensure that the flash install is also as fresh as can be and ensuring flash wont try to preconfigure itself with Firefox using the configuration in your old profile. This should be the most sure fire way to fix flash. If you find this doesn't work just close Firefox and delete the new profile folder that Firefox has created in place of the old profile folder then move the old profile folder you put in a safe place back in place where the new profile folder just was, this should make things the way they were before you did anything with Firefox.

Inappropriate? Thanks, Kyle, I followed your advice and disabled Java. I'll let you know how that "fix" works. Best, Kevin
-
Kevin did it work for you, I'm anxious to know if it fixed the problem so i can work on some real fixes for Java so it doesn't need to be disabled to play flash video. -
Inappropriate?HI every body
I have just solved this problem with my laptop since i faced this problem with google browser and with IE8 too... simply i solved this problem by going to my desktop then right click on my computer, then go to properties, then device manager. what you have to do is to UNINSTALL your audio device or your sound card or whatever you want to name it, and then restart your PC so at startup your PC or your Laptop will install the audio device automatically, or you can install it if you have its driver... Thats all folks :)
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I just tried to install the DirectX and a window popped up saying that the logo hadn't been checked with microsoft yet and would not be installed. I work from home, my livelihood depends on my being able to watch videos etc online. I cannot watch youtube etc w/o it crashing, sometimes w/i seconds of being on the site. This has been going on since I upgraded my FF to the latest version. I don't know what to do. Sadly, I can only use FF for my job so I am stuck. I'm not a computer person so I have no clue how to fix it. How can they continue to let this happen?
-
While my computer still crashes on Flash sometimes...it was MUCH worse when I upgraded to FF 3.63 -- it crashed ALL the time. I reinstalled version 3.6 and that's where I'm staying for now. -

Inappropriate?Same problem over here; at every "session" my Firefox browser will crash (running 64-bit Firefox on a 64-bit Windows 7 OS, HP Pavillion laptop).
One thing that always gets it going again without crashing for a while is putting the computer to sleep, then taking out the battery and re-inserting. It runs fine for a while, until it happens again and I once more remove the battery.
I’m Annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Kyle, disabling Java made no difference on my computer, I was still experiencing the crashes. I also went through the diagnostic/testing procedure you outlined for DirectX. Everything was working fine, but I still experienced the crashing. Next, on my own, I went to the Device Manager and checked to make sure that I had the current drivers for all audio and video devices that I could find. Most were current, but I think a couple may have been updated with more current versions. Unfortunately, I don't recall which drivers may have been updated. After going through this process and restarting my computer, I have been able to use video error free ever since. I don't know if what I did was related, but for now I'm not complaining.

What you have described is a common fix for the same problem in ubuntu. I suspect it's related to flash being unable to access a device due to it being improperly configured.
I don't see why there would be any more problems in flash if it was in fact due to drivers, in any case this sounds like a stable fix. As long as flash can access the devices it needs to your in the clear. If the same error does happen again try updating all of your drivers, if there's no update for some drivers then just reinstall them(not every driver on the system, just the ones for devices likely to be used by flash as you described). Your drivers could have been corrupt or just too out of date for flash to use. -
Inappropriate?Hey guys its really simple, believe me, the real problem is with the audio device/driver with your laptop or PC... UNINSTALL it and restart your computer, install your audio driver again and your problem will be solved :)
I’m za best

Inappropriate?Wow... Tats seem to be a great answer let me try it.. If that will be the real pbm, thn Balqis will surely get a big treat frm me.. :)
-
hehehe really don't worry, it will work believe me, the same happened with me and i didn't believe it :)... once you restart your pc, the windows will automatically install your audio driver, if the windows didn't, you must have your drivers CD or you can install it from any website... try it and please till others about it :) -
Sorry... Balqis.. Firefox crashed again.. :( U missed the treat :( -
Inappropriate?i did all things u said here... But.... same happened

Inappropriate? This is a known Flash issue, it's been addressed in the Flash web update (10.1). The issue is not indicative of what OS you run or what browser you use. It's a huge flaw on Adobe's end; updating to Flash version 10.1 RC will resolve the issue, but I suggest you wait until the final version is released, which will be very shortly.
-
Finally Adobe admits the mistakes.. They releases Flash Player 10.1 RC, fixes tons of bugs including all browser crashes. You can download it from here. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ -
Inappropriate?this release (10.1) fix the bug ?? anyone?
-
You got nothing to lose by trying ;) -
Inappropriate?yeah.. you're right, I've testthe 10.1.... and the problem persists again.
-
Inappropriate?Been battling this issue for nearly a year on an older XP machine that would crash hard (shut down) when playing any video or when going into sleep mode.
Flash came into the picture when I noticed it crashing far more often with my wife playing Farmtown, which I understand uses Flash. It also crashed regularly, but not entirely consistently, when playing videos on YouTube.
The only thing that solved the problem each time was reinstalling the original NVIDIA chipset drivers. Sometimes different video drivers reduced the frequency of crashes, but didn't eliminate them. After reinstalling the chipset drivers, even with Flash installed, it would remain crash free until a Flash update was installed.
So, at least for my configuration, it seems that Flash installation/updating is somehow corrupting the video and/or some related chipset driver configuration. -
Cool, the latest version of Flash Player (10.1) installed itself a few days ago & of course my computer has been crashing on any video playback since. This time the only fix that works is removing the Flash player entirely. Flash is a joke! -
Inappropriate? My system Crashing continues with latest Firefox and latest flash version. Wat do ?
-
Switch to Chrome or IE8 -
Switch to Chrome or IE8 -
r u joking man? IE8 is really a waste. then about Chrome. We cant use chrome 4 a min also. It giving Aw Snap window. a similar mode of crash. -
There's nothing wrong with IE8, people just love to hate it because of the past versions of explorer, 8 is fairly solid with some tweaking. As far as Chrome goes, I don't use it, but you always have the option of using Opera, or reverting back to an old version of FF. -
Inappropriate?IE8 or Opera or Firefox will not prevent the problem that is the subject of this thread--as Jasir already knows from having read the entire thread.
-
Inappropriate?* Run Reginout scan for active-x, file associations and other registry erros largely behind such crashes. ( http://www.filetransit.com/screenshot... )
* Try to uninstall the current flash player version. (Read this official guide to uninstall flash plugin: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157... )
* Use official uninstaller tool to remove all flash elements from your computer.
* After completing the above task download flash player 9 instead of the latest version. Sometimes there are intricate browser flash conflicts and changing the versions is often helpful.
* Update your sound drivers if possible since the videos may simply crash because of the corrupted or missing drivers.
1) Open Device Manager
2) Find the sound-card device
3) Remember the name of the device
4) ReInstall / Update drivers.
5) After doing this restart your system. -
Inappropriate?BeeCee,
Get your problem solved yet?
Best to you,
Kevin
P.S. We are missing your moralizing missives.
I’m enjoying schadenfreude.
-
Egads! Moralizing missives?? Alliterative, but I hope not accurate. I have nothing to add to this thread other than what I've already experienced. I still get crashes from Flash, although somewhat less these days. I have the latest video and audio drivers I know of for my Inspiron 8600 ancient laptop. The only info is this. I am running Firefox 3.6 -- every time I have upgraded to the newer version, currently 3.6.6, the Flash crashes have increased considerably, so I keep downgrading by reinstalling 3.6 -- which Flash crashes a whole lot less. Again I have this problem with Chrome and IE as well. But I'm less experienced with those browsers since I use FF all the time. -
Inappropriate? The issue with my computer is, happily, solved. Maybe the IT gremlins look unfavorably on you, BeeCee.
-
Inappropriate?Thank you for this thread. One of the suggestions here did help me fix my problem. I have Win7 x64, FF 3.6.6, Flash 10.1 r53. My problems was crashing on Flash pages with FF only. Chrome and IE were unaffected. The page that crashed it consistently, everytime was www dot satruck dot org.
Creating a new profile solved my problem so far. The instructions are here:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/R...
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I started following this yesterday but looked further into the problem. Try these 2 pages:
Firefox:

Adobe:

Hope that helps! Good luck!
I’m hopeful!

Inappropriate?Using Firefox 3.6.7, Flash 10.1.53.64 and Java 6.0.210.6
Vista 64-bit OS
On a Gateway, Core 2 Duo CPU, 2.26GHZ, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS, Laptop.
All drivers are up to date.
Firefox started crashing about 3 days ago... it was fine before that. Now most flash banners/videos crash Firefox. IE is not affected.
I'm afraid I don't see what in those two links is supposed to help us kkwang18
I’m saddened that I may have to go back to IE
-
Inappropriate? It's funny i have same problem. But if i use my computer different account, i can see flash. But if i use my regular account in same computer then it crashes again. Then if i enable Shockwave Flash, then crashes stops, but then i can't see any flash files :(
It's stuped! Die Firefox die!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I just re-installed flash (over the previous version without uninstalling it) it is the exact same release version (10.1.53.64) but now the crashes are significantly less - I can use youtube etc fine now.
It seems to be an extremely odd problem indeed.
I’m a little less annoyed now
-
Inappropriate? Here is a solution that worked for me.
It's simple, you just need to install an older version of flash player (the 10.1.53.64 version is wrong)
So use uninstall_flash_player.exe to unistall your actual version (go there to download it : http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157...)
Then install Flash Player 10.0.12.36 --- compatible Windows 2000 / XP / Vista
(available there : http://www.oldapps.com/flash_player.p...)
And it works again... -
If you actually read the discussion - that is a solution which only works for SOME people, not everyone. Whats more is that it might just reduce the number of crashes rather than getting rid of them altogether... giving the illusion of fixing the problem. -

this one wil not work. Change ur n/w card, nd get pbm fixed -
Inappropriate?Just dropping in to say that I have this problem, and it isdefinitely worse recently. Since I allow Firefox and Flash to update themselves, it seems one or other or both has moved in a bad direction in this respect...
-
Inappropriate?I think the pbm is with any of ur new drivers. I changed my network card in to a new one. After tat only the crashing started. So i am goin to change tat. If u have crashing related to internet. Then it only bcoz of n/w cards.
-
Inappropriate? This is a ridiculous solution: that I should change my hardware to work with Firefox.
The problem is not a hardware one, it is firefox. The hardware in my laptop hasn't changed, but firefox has become massively less stable. Get new hardware? I don't think so...
-
Inappropriate?Martin,
The problem is NOT Firefox. Read the thread.
This problem occurs over various web browsers, IE, Chrome, et al. are equally affected. I have all there on my 'puter, and all three crash similarly.
Readers: there is some truth--and worthwhile analysis on this thread, but there is also a boatload of crap on here, too. If you're having this computer problem, read the entire thread.
I’m astounded at the idiocy of most of the "experts" who pontificate on this issue.
-
Inappropriate?Thanks Kevin!
As you say, it's a long thread with a lot of stuff in it.
What's the executive summary? (I presume it is not "change your hardware") -
Inappropriate?Every time when flash crash my computer sending report. Why nobody don't do nothing? Why the hell my computer sending this if nobody cares?
I’m frustrated
-
bzzt wrong. I don't have FireTorrent, but I do have the problem. -
Just trie to enable-disable different programs and see what happened. This is only way for find invalid program! -
Inappropriate?Okay I managed to get rid of the problem on two of my machines. You need to delete FLASH and all directories and all files associated with flash. I wish I had made a list but I didn't. ---Then, install the newest version of Flash.
JUST UPDATING WILL NOT HELP --- you have to delete all traces of the crime before you update. For some reason Adobe is not cleaning house on updates and there is some file that is causing this that is not being replaced. There may be other causes but... hey, it fixed mine!
And people wonder why the Ipad has no flash? Good Grief.
There may be flash junk in some other dirs and maybe some plugins or such so if anyone figures out where the nasties are, please post it. I am thinking its more than one file.

I’m about to pass out
-
I went to the Adobe site and ran a FLASH Uninstaller, then re-installed Flash. So far so good, but it is early days. The Uninstaller is here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downlo... -
Inappropriate?Don't know if this will help anybody else but I seem to have fixed the problem on my computer. In desperation after trying everything else and because some of the error messages after crashes said that it could be a device or a driver, I replaced my video card and enabled Adobe Flash (Firefox/tools/addons/plugins) and voila!! Everything has been working perfectly since, touch wood.
I’m thankful
-
Sorry, it only worked for 2 days, then the crashing and freezing started worse than ever. Whereas I used to leave my computer on standby all day, I find this adds to the problem. Turning it off for a while every few hours seems to help. -

Inappropriate?I can confirm that uninstalling the Flash Player and reinstalling it (the latest version) on OSX Snow Leopard doesn't do the trick.
Creating a new profile in Firefox did do the trick!! BUT there is a small error, typo, I don't know, in page for which Kyle already gave the link for http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/R....
It says that you have to open your Terminal program and type in this to open the Profile Manager
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager
but that didn't open the Profile Manager for me. On another mozilla-page (in Dutch) I found that it should be:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -ProfileManager
notice the capital P and M in the word profilemanager
Very happy I found this thread b.t.w. allways nice to know you're not alone struggling with faulty software.
I’m really excited
-
Sorry guys, after shutting down my computer and starting it up again today, FF crashed as it used to before I created the new profile :-(.
The quest continues.... -
Inappropriate?I found this on another site and will pass it on here.
In the address bar, type "about:config" (without the quotes of course).
Click past the warning and tell them you'll be careful!
Where it says filter at the top type this EXACTLY.
dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs
Insure you put in the dots and yes that is a capital S.
Enter.
Then at the value area double click there until box opens and type -1
That is minus one.
If there is another value there delete it and put in -1
It should solve the Flash plug-in crashing. -
Good one! Thanks! -
Thanks for posting this but it didn't work for me (OSX Snow Leopard, FF 3.6.8). The value that was there was 45, the same as on my laptop where FF is not crashing. Changed it to -1 then restarted FF, visited nytimes.com and it crashed immediately :-( -

I spoke too soon. It seemed to improve, but I still get freezes and other strange behaviour (screen artifacts etc) -
Inappropriate?I uninstalled FireTorrent like legioetrangerefrancaise suggested - the problems all went away. Obviously not everyone has FireTorrent so it doesnt explain all the problems, however, if you do have it you should definitely remove it.
Before that, the only solution I had was to use Firefox (with Java and Flash disabled) for all my internet needs except when I wanted to play videos etc - then I would copy the address into IE and use it just to watch the video.
I hate IE though.
I’m happy I solved the prob but unhappy that others are still suffering.
-
Inappropriate?I reinstalled Flash as advised by Sabine. Since that time I didn't have a crash, but I still did have freezes etc.
Then I did the fix suggested yesterday by tmr3513 and I haven't had a problem since...
I’m thankful
-
I spoke too soon. Less frequent, but still freezes and screen artifacts left around... -
Inappropriate?Just a additional thought.
There is an Firefox add on called flash block.
It disables all flash content on a web page.
Any flash content you wish to view or enable can be done, just by a mouse click on the content.
If you don't like IE you can always use Chrome. :-0 -
Inappropriate?Add the FF add on Flash Block to your browsers extensions.
The sheer number of flash advertising on certain web sites just overwhelms adobe flash.
Most people find them annoying anyway.
Also try TACO another FF extension.
It will tell you just how much tracking cookies and other crap is going on ,on each web page you view.
You can disable and block it all.
I have had multiple web sites open in tabs with a flash video playing on each one and NO crashes.
So...something is working. -
Inappropriate?I was just experiencing the same issue in this thread and managed to work out a solution. If anyone here has AVG Link Scanner or similar software installed on their computer try turning if off. I can't tell exactly whose fault it is since I updated multiple products (including java, flash and several Firefox addons) at the same time I reinstalled AVG, but disabling fixed my issue. Hope this helps.
I’m conented.
